Archaeological Park
To really appreciate the history of Pafos, just trace your way through the remains in the Kato Paphos Archaelogical Park – on the world heritage list since 1980. The site includes monuments from prehistoric times through to the Roman era and even the medieval period.   The most impressive part has to be the Roman Mosaics next to the Medieval Fort at the harbour.  These are in fact the beautifully preserved floors of four roman villas, dating back from the 3rd to the 5th century AD, known as the Houses of Dionysos, Theseus, Orpheus and Aion.
The 2nd century limestone-built Ancient Odeon comes alive in the height of summer with theatre and concerts organized by the Paphos Municipality.  Indulge in some time travel fantasy by closing your eyes and picturing yourself as a well to do Roman citizen enjoying the pleasures of empire.  The ruins of Saranta Kolones (forty Columns) castle, built by the Lusignans in the 13th century and destroyed by and earthquake in 1222, stand on the remains of a previous Byzantine Fort.
